result = number × (percent / 100)

20% of 50,000 = 10,000.

Guide

Calculate percentages, percentage change, markups, and discounts for everyday maths. Double-check critical financial uses; this is a helper tool only.

How percentage calculations work

Part = rate/100 × whole. After increase: value × (1 + rate); after discount: value × (1 − rate). Change % = (new − old) / old × 100.

Practical 2026 uses and mistakes

Stacking two 10% discounts is not 20%. Confusing percentage points with percent change is a frequent error.

Tips

  • Always ask “percent of what?” first.
  • Guidance only—verify formulas on important decisions.
